Hello! Here in Germany the 800 trombones were sold in the 80s of the last century. I owned and now own an 842 (Bb/F) with a .550 bore. As far as I know, the 8000 numbers were only intended for Japan or were custom-made. I just bought a YBL-8110 from Japan (like the YBL-611) and also had an 8210 (like the 421), all with 'custom' slides and the typical tuning slide rings and the double trapeze rings on the slide .

Nice find! I have a Yamaha 421G and was troubled by the trigger. Sometimes my thumb would cause the trigger to not fully return--the side of my thumb would touch the portion of the lever going back to the valve. I had a tech change the trigger so that the lever was above my thumb and it suddenly became much more playable for me. He was even able to reuse all the Yamaha parts. Enjoy the horn!

I had no idea Yamaha even made a .500” Bb/F! Seems like a great horn, seeing how good the 352 genuinely is. I still do prefer the projection pattern of the 3BF, but the response was a little thuddier, so I can see why you’d like the Yamaha’s immediacy for playing the higher parts in the section. How are the ergonomics? The overall weight distribution and the trigger hold seem like quite an adjustment for a 3B player.

Custom line (not including the Custom Z line which is still sold everywhere) still survives in Japan, on the 820GII, and there are even 2 new horns: 823 and 825. All JDM. Yamaha seems to reserve the Custom line for the models that are created by Japan, for Japan. That said, it is amazing that you can find many of the horns that are rare even in Japan. I have seen the 8130 on auction site once ina while, but this 852 and the YBL-630 don’t even show up in part list search system.

The Custom name is actually still the default top-level name for Yamaha, and is used on all 800/8000 and 900/9000 series brass instruments except the large bore/alto/bass trombones (Xeno), some (but not all, thanks Yamaha) of the Bb trumpets (Xeno), and the Neo brass band models that are 800 series (some are 600 series, again thanks Yamaha).

i believe the custom line still exists for the trombones but only on the 891z? i think that's the model? essentially their king 2b competitor. i believe yamaha still offers endless customization options on their Xeno lines but only in japan and through very select dealers/workshops, but they aren't particularly denoted as having differences form the standard market Xeno's outside of what is obviously visible or marked on shop cards. Ive long heard of yamaha chopping bells for people on the xeno's before they even offered the D marked cutbells as a standard and also doing more custom/built to order requests. a friend in japan played briefly with a guy that had a 882o with a solid sterling silver bell yamaha made for him. so i think yamaha does custom work still just at their own discretion and probalby for extreme prices

    • @AidanRitchie

They will do custom work if you ask directly and pay the big bux. Some custom orders were even produced in very limited quantities for sale, such as the YSL-892ZX (which is an 891Z with an F attachment).

Good video. Thanks! To add a little to your idea: Sometimes we need to treat it more like a job and less like a relationship. Its hard because we are so personally invested but If you think about someone with a non music job or even athletes rarely perform any where close to 90%. Also I think we always want to play with our best sound and when it doesn't happen we get really down. Many a time a colleague has apologized for not playing well and I've thought they played really pretty well. Sometimes we place a lot of value on one aspect of our playing in a moment that's in the big picture really isn't a deal breaker. Our bass trombonist told me to listen to a performance of ours from two years ago. In the moment I said to him that I remembered that performance as being pretty bad. He said just listen again now. I did and it was not perfect but really had some good moments. I guess at the time I was holding myself to some sort of wacko standard, not meeting myself where I was and had attached a bunch of bad feelings to the performance.

I was a woodwind player first for years, then a serious singer. The hardest adjustment to make was learning to deal with how fickle the vocal folds are -- way more than reeds. Now I play horn, and that mental set from singing of "the biology of my instrument is different every day, and that's ok" has been SO helpful at preventing demotivation on horn.

My friend; I took a similar amount of time off and I completely empathize with you. Just keep in mind; we are only moving forward every time we pick up the horn. During those twenty years I didn’t play my horn; I was playing bass for a living. This last year; I finally got the chance to start gigging in a small group setting on trombone. It’s so different for me than playing that same kind of gig on bass! Such a different part of my brain is being being used. I think that’s what I like most about playing the horn now. I would definitely be more technically developed if I had stayed with the horn but maybe I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much. I remember part of why I quit to begin with was I was burned out. Keep enjoying it

Best thing since sliced bread. The rubber sleeve goes on the lower brace only once and left in place with a wrap of tape, so not an issue. I have modified my bass trombone case such that I can leave the support on all the time, so again not an issue for me. My frozen shoulder issue which made me stop playing is a thing of the past. Regarding a comfortable balance position for the bone, set the angle of the slide and bell sections in a V shape such that the support bar is vertical in the tube, such that it is balanced.

I think this trombone was designed and engineered for marching due to light weight and for big band back then when music for bass wasn’t that low with double rotors. In the common wealth countries ,such as Canada ,Australia , Jamaica and so forth where mostly get are instruments from Great Britain then , 80 years ago we used G basses for marching and concert bands.the big bass trombone was mostly used in orchestra, such as Bach, and Conn. king was mostly for jazz and marching military bands
